11 cruise ships in port for New Year’s Eve

Funchal harbour in big demand as usual

FN report that Funchal’s harbour is an obvious attraction on New Year’s Eve in Madeira, where the firework display, known around the world, is popular with locals, but more especially to visitors looking for this destination on the maritime tourist trail.
It is therefore not surprising that 11 cruise ships will be in port on 31 December 2019, one on the North Pier (AIDAstella) and two others on the South Pier, (Mein Schiff 3 and Queen Vitória), the rest being stood off at sea, where they can observe the fireworks with the backdrop of the Funchal amphitheatre.
The other ships are the Zenith, Balmoral, Sapphire Saga, Columbus, Aurora, Marco Polo, Marella Explorer and Amera. The latter will be in Porto Santo between 12:00 and 18:00, then head for Funchal where it will stay until 20:00 on 1 January 2020.

  1. I don’t know whether the APRAM forecast has been updated since it was first published, but as Maurice says it has 12 ships listed – the Madeira registered Ocean Majesty arriving on the 30th, departing 0200 / 1st is the additional ship on the list.
I’ll throw in the AIDAcara berthing 0400/ 1st – to make it possibly 13 – lets face it nobody would notice the smell of burning paint off the funnel and the red glowing exhausts if the captain needed to “put the pedal to the metal” – no point in arriving late for this party !!
