New viewpoint overlooking Ribeira da Janela

Lamaceiros picnic and leisure park in Porto Moniz 1With parking spaces, toilets and a viewpoint overlooking Ribeira da Janela and part of the North Coast, the Lamaceiros picnic and leisure park in Porto Moniz also has a large green area and three other areas with BBQ decks backed by tables and benches, in what is a perfect setting for picnics.

Another feature of this park is based on a wheat mill, built at the request of the local population and available to farmers to make flour, interestingly, the nickname of the mayor who opened the contract in August 2004, Gabriel Farinha (translating as “flour”).

The space is very busy, especially on holidays and weekends, but there is still a considerable percentage of Madeirans who do not know this somewhat remote area.

You can do a levada, but start walking very early

The Levada da Ribeira da Janela starts right next to the park. Along its 13 kilometers of length, the trail leads the hikers into the unique interior of this valley and only stops at Ribeira da Janela. Between round trip, it takes about eight hours to complete.

In addition, it is through this levada that the Ribeira da Janela hydroelectric power station uses the waters conducted by the channel to a storage chamber located at the Lamaceiros site, overlooking the mouth of the stream, at a level of about 410 meters.
