Another Portuguese navy ship comes to Madeira

Sines Ocean Patrol Ship arrives 1The Diario reports that on Sunday the ‘Sines’ Ocean Patrol Ship will arrive in Madeira to will remain in the Region until mid-September, with the main objective of ensuring the responsiveness to search and rescue situations and contribute to the maritime patrolling effort, support regional civil protection bodies in natural disasters or disasters, and cooperate with other State departments with competence at sea.

According to a statement from the Madeira Maritime Zone Command, the arrival of the Sines stems from the increased naval arrangements for patrolling the Madeira EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. It will join the NRP Hidra which arrived on the 9th of August. The other “NRP” vessel NRP Álvares Cabral has departed, contrary to some reports.

The NRP ‘Sines’ was built at the West Sea / Edisoft Consortium Shipyards in Viana do Castelo and was added to the fleet of the Navy ships on July 6, 2018.

It is the third ship in a series of four of the Viana do Castelo class, has a length of 83 metres and has a displacement of 1850 tons.

Since its construction the ‘Sines’ has been commanded by Captain Lieutenant Mónica Martins. The vessel has a garrison composed of 8 officers, 9 sergeants and 27 crew.

Captain Lieutenant Mónica Martins makes history in the Portuguese Navy by becoming the first female pilot commander of a new ship, in this case the NRP Sines.
