It appears that the paragliding unit did not open and the victim eventually fell onto a beach near Penha D’Águia.

Municipal firefighters of Machico were mobilized, but at this moment they have not yet managed to reach the victim.

The emergency response team were called out, but could not reach the man either, as he had fallen into an area that was ​​difficult to access.

The Journal confirmed shortly afterwards that a man of American nationality had passed away this afternoon.

They confirm that the parachute did not open. So far, there is no more information about this occurrence. Machico Municipal Firefighters mobilized a team of eight members to the scene. The warning was given at 1:20 pm by the Civil Protection.

In an update later the Journal added that rescuers are already at the body of the 40-year-old American who died this afternoon while practicing ‘Base Jumping‘. The firefighters accessed the body through a path, since the maritime conditions were not the most appropriate for this purpose.

According to the commander of the Maritime Zone of Madeira, Guerreiro Cardoso, the operation is being coordinated by the Funchal Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Sub-Center and the Regional Civil Protection Service of Madeira, having also had the collaboration of Sanas.

The Maritime Police, Machico Municipal Fire and Civil Protection are also on site.

At this time, the authorities are awaiting the arrival of the health delegate to officially confirm the death. The body will, it seems, be removed by land.
