Portugal will escape the week-long heatwave

Portugal will escape the European heatwave 1Portugal will escape the week-long heatwave which is set to affect most of continental Europe. Across Europe authorities have urged children and older people to stay indoors and issued severe warnings against dehydration and heatstroke. France is predicted to break its all-time record high temperature today according to the BBC. The Washington Post reports that a heat wave killed 15,000 in France in 2003.

Meteorologists are predicting that temperatures will reach or even exceed 40C from Spain to Switzerland as hot air moves in up from the Sahara due to a storm stalling over the Atlantic and high pressure over central Europe. What is worrying climate change experts is that the heatwave has arrived so early this year.

  1. Advice for dog owners. Taken from The Local Spain.

    If you have a dog:

Apart from the never leaving your pet in a parked car, be careful about taking them for a walk in the heat of the day as they could burn their paws on the hot pavement.

Spain’s Civil Guard issued a warning to test the heat of the road with your hand and if you can’t bear it for more than five seconds it is too hot for your dog.
