Various updates below in the aftermath of the tragic bus crash yesterday:

The Regional Executive, meeting extraordinarily, have announced that Madeira will hold three days of official mourning due to the tragic accident that happened yesterday in Caniço. The three days start today.

 According to the regional Health Directorate, two of the 28 injured in the bus crash who entered the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça are Portuguese and the rest are foreigners, and there is no records of any child victims. Two of the injured were quickly discharged, and another two are reported to be in critical condition. The tour guide is believed to be one of the seriously injured. The morgue at the airport was considered for housing the victims, but in the end the main hospital in Funchal was used.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will travel to Funchal in the next few days on a plane from the Portuguese Air Force, the official source of the Presidency of the Republic told press agency Lusa.

Bus owner ready to collaborate

The company that owns the five year-old bus from Madeira has expressed “deep commitment” to all the “facts, causes and responsibilities” and readiness to collaborate with the authorities.
In a statement sent to the agency Lusa, SAM – Sociedade de Automóveis da Madeira, owner of the bus that was chartered by Travel One, has expressed the “most heartfelt condolences to all the relatives and friends of the victims”.
“It is our will and deep commitment that the absolute determination of all the facts, causes and responsibilities of the accident is obtained and, from now on, we declare that we will cooperate fully with the authorities responsible for the investigations that will be followed”.
The company also expressed the “total solidarity with all those injured in the accident and who are in hospital care”.
