  1. Amazing how quickly they jumped on mechanical failer. We lived in Madeira and the speed the bus drivers drive is crazy. We have also had to tell taxi drivers to slow down and also to get of the phone while driving. There needs to be an independent enquiry on the bus mechanics.

  2. With accidents of this magnitude there will be a very thorough and detailed investigation into the cause. It is important that this covers all aspects to determine lessons that need to be learned and put into practice to reduce the risk of a similar tragedy. During this there will be various statements attributable to various parties as the possible cause of the accident. It is important that these are viewed just as comments, and avoid speculation which is never helpful. I have overseen many investigations, into both traffic accidents resulting in death and criminal cases, in my time in police over a period of 35 years and sometimes it is not what it seems. Let’s wait and see the official outcome of the investigation. David Thomas, President Safe Communities Portugal

    • Totally agree with you Sir. Expert comments. Stop the so called “know it all lot”. They’re not the voice of reason, if they can’t say anything helpful then shut up.

    • Totally agree with you Sir. An Expert opinion surely counts more than a dozen of hot headed know it all kind. If you can’t find anything helpful then shut up. In such painful circumstances we need to find out the truth not gossip.

  3. Next time we visit…I will be shouting at the Taxi Driver from the airport to our hotel to slow down ..my heart goes out to the relatives of this terrible tragedy and of course we have to see the official outcome before conclusions are drawn..BUT many drivers including taxi and bus drivers…are speeding and we all need be more careful at zebra crossings where many drivers in Madeira have no regard for pedestrians.

  4. I agree with J Jebb, having visited Madeira on a number of occasions, I too was horrified at the speed bus drivers drive. There should be some sort of contact where one can report these drivers.
