Porto Santo New Year’s swim tradition.

25 years diving in the sea on the first day of the year

Here goes with the first post of the year, after a day off yesterday forced by the precarious nature of the website. Lots of features have been turned off until the back door that has allowed hackers in has been identified and closed. Hopefully the website will hold up, but if it does continue to show resource errors please be patient. Mobile users may find the site difficult to view in “mobile friendly” format for the time being. If anybody has any idea who might be behind it please get in touch using the Contact Form.

The Diario website reports that on the 1st January 1994, at 12.30, five young people dived into the sea of Porto Santo. Today in 2019, 25 years have passed, and of the five, two continue to dive and were joined by twenty more courageous divers to commemorate the “golden” anniversary of the tradition on the “golden island”.
After twenty five years of tradition, only two of the five courageous divers are still in Porto Santo. Roberto Sousa and António Maia, however, have been joined another 20 divers from Porto Santo, and yesterday faithfully dived into the sea at 12.30, for the first day of the year.
