New variety of sea bass caught

Climate change responsible?

New variety of sea bass caught 1Nicolò Pavesi, an Italian physiotherapist who worked in Madeira a few years ago, told the Journal that he had seen the fish whilst diving previously, but on the last occasion succeeded in catching one. He shared photos of the species on social media with groups of fishermen and biologists where his catch aroused great interest and curiosity.
The physiotherapist, who has been underwater fishing in Madeira for three years, with an average of three dives per week, has no doubt that he has “an exceptional catch”. The fish has been frozen and is waiting to be delivered to scientific authorities.
Whilst not habitual in the Madeiran seas, this variety is found in the waters off the Portuguese mainland. It also has a high commercial interest, and scientists who have already contacted the diver want to understand why this “diversion” to the Madeira Sea has taken place and whether more will be found.
The newspaper speculates whether climate change may be the cause of this ‘voyage’ to the Bay of Funchal.
