Worlds Best Island DestinationTonight Madeira was again voted as the ‘World’s Best Island Destination’ by the World Travel Awards, an accolade that has been awarded every year since 2015.
The verdict was announced at the ceremony of the 25th edition of the World Travel Awards, the ‘Oscars’ of tourism worldwide that were held tonight the Pátio da Galé, in Terreiro do Paço, in Lisbon. The international awards, created in 1993, aim to distinguish what is best in the tourism sector worldwide. They recognise the work developed in the area of ​​the tourist industry in order to stimulate competitiveness and quality, with the selection of nominees being made by the general public and by more than 200,000 tourism professionals from 160 countries.
The region had already been honoured this year for the fifth time as Europe’s ‘best island destination’ – an achievement that Madeira had already won in 2017, 2016, 2014 and 2013.
The event was the first time Portugal has hosted the World Travel Awards, although it had already been the venue for the European finals in 2009 (Obidos) and in 2012 (Algarve). The competition returns to Portugal next year after Madeira was the chosen to host the European ceremony, as announced last May.
