Bad weather warning cancelled. “Selfies”.

Weather forecast improves

Bad weather warning cancelled. "Selfies". 1The bad weather warning  issued yesterday by the port authorities has been cancelled. The weather warning had initially been issued for the South Coast of Madeira (yellow warning level), and the North Coast and Porto Santo (both with the higher orange warnings) until Monday.
Four flights (5 according to the Journal) were diverted to Port Santo (photo from the Diario) yesterday afternoon when the airport on Madeira closed for a short period due to the predictably high winds. Two students returning to Madeira from a cultural exchange in Germany opted to stay in Porto Santo when it was announced that the Lufthansa flight was returning for another attempt to land on Madeira, failing which it would return to Frankfurt – wrong choice as it turned out as they found that they were not entitled to accommodation and there was no ferry until today.

Meanwhile tourists, as usual, disregarded the warnings to take “selfies” yesterday at Praia Formosa.

  1. On a separate note, on Saturday we went up the West End to see Porgy & Bess. Strolling down St Martin’s Lane spotted a greasy-spoon cafe and decided to go in for some lunch. Not often you get a chance to order “Duas Chinesas” the place was run by a Madeiran lady!

Fernando’s cafe on St Martin’s Lane – we heard lots of Portuguese being spoken whilst there so it’s obviously a popular spot. Oh, they also have Pastel da Nata too.
