Airport problems as forecast.

Predicted high winds arrive and cause airport problems

Airport problemsAirport problems – high winds: It seems my weather forecasts are becoming remarkably accurate! As first predicted here (by some margin!), problems arose quickly this morning at the airport. By this afternoon, 14 flights have already been diverted and another six have been cancelled. Most of the planes that have diverted have gone back to Lisbon, or on to Porto Santo or Canary Islands. Latest information from the airport website.
The Diario reports that one gust of 98kmph was reported this morning, and the the forecast of high winds remains in place until noon tomorrow, although they are hoping that they will begin to subside earlier.

19.00: Flights are already returning to normal as the winds abate. Flights started landing late afternoon shortly after 16.00, and the same planes  were quickly departing before 17.00. After that business as usual. Guess it’s been an uncomfortable wait for some returning passengers today, as Monday is invariably the busiest day at the airport here. Porto Santo will also have been busy, receiving a number of flights for a while.
