RTP report that for the fifth consecutive year, the municipality of Câmara de Lobos promotes the presentation of a mega-king cake. The typical bolo-rei at the event has previously been around 150 metres in total length and have an approximate total weight of 250 kilograms. The presentation will take place tomorrow, Sunday, January 7, at 11:00 am, in Praça da Autonomia. It is part of the growing “Festa” in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos.

Festas de Santo Amaro

Festa de Santo AmaroThanks to Debs for alerting readers who had enquired previously – the Festa de Santo Amaro schedule for Santa Cruz is now finally available online.
Santo Amaro is celebrated throughout the Catholic world in both a festive and ceremonial way. In Madeira this involves dismantling cribs and “sweeping the cupboards” – a tradition that consists of visiting family and friends who come together to share the last delicacies of the Festa. This festa is particularly celebrated in the coastal town of Santa Cruz, beneath the westerly end of the airport that shares its name.

Ban on rip off credit card fees

Credit cardsNumerous sources report that a ban comes into effect in the UK next Saturday on the credit and debit card charges typically applied to online purchases, notably airline tickets. The ban also applies to in-store transactions and covers other payment methods such as PayPal or Apple Pay.

  1. More airport problems this afternoon:

Three flights were diverted from Madeira Airport between 3.30 and 4.00 due to wind gusting up to 78 km/h – two went to Porto Santo and one to the Canaries. Several planes heading for Funchal were forced to remain in a holding position before attempting to land.

In the meantime there are six cancelled flights between arrivals and corresponding departures. One Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt and two from Paris, one operated by Aigle Azur and another by Transavia have attempted to land.

This afternoon there was a gust of 111 km/h recorded above the airport.
