The Funchal Ecotrail is taking place this morning, covered by a very effective live blog here. There are four races, over distances of 15, 25, 40 and 80km. Ecotrail races are held in a number of major European cities, originating in Paris 9 years ago.  The publicity states that “Ecotrail Funchal ….. highlights the unique characteristics of Madeira Island and of the City of Funchal, more precisely, in what concerns the environmental component and its natural beauty, as well as the ecological and sustained concern”.

Air Quality Index in Madeira classified as ‘Very Good’

On a similar topic, the Diario reports today that the Region is one of the few areas in Europe to meet the air quality standards defined by the EU. A conference held on Friday by The Regional Secretary for the Environment and Natural Resources heard how the system of air quality monitoring on the island had been considerably improved recently, and that the statistics that had been forthcoming recently had been “very good”.

  1. And VERY warm for the EcoTrail contestants…….their water intake must be sufficient, otherwise….orange warning for heat…heat stroke is possible.
Hope that the organisers have contingency plans……..very hot and dry.
