More Savoy! Portugal go to World Cup.

Savoy PalaceIn another highly controversial move, the Diario today reports that the Madeira government has approved an increase in the number of beds at the Savoy Palace hotel in the Infante area of Funchal by 300 to 1128, according to a resolution published yesterday in the Jornal Oficial da Região.
According to the newspaper the Madeiran executive argues that the “36% increase” requested by Savoy Investimentos Turísticos, SA, does not conflict with the Tourism Planning Program of the region nor with the Infante area’s Urbanization Plan (PUI), which covers the district where the hotel is being constructed.
The new hotel has been widely criticized for the sheer volume of the building, photographed yesterday rather appropriately on Skyscraper City. In addition to the prior justification, the executive also considered that the new building is not a “dissonant and / or detached element”, as it is within the guidelines of the PUI defined by Câmara Municipal do Funchal and, as such, decided at the meeting on October 4th of the Conselho de Governo, and subsequently not immediately publicised, “to make possible the alteration of the lodging capacity of the tourist enterprise”.
The Savoy Palace is under a partial “embargo” at the moment, imposed by Câmara Municipal do Funchal due to disagreements over whether the approved plan was being correctly followed. It is not clear what the details and the implications of this embargo are.

What is not clear here is whether the increase from the previous authorised capacity of 828 beds covers rooms already constructed, or whether any additional build is involved? Perhaps they plan to put another few floors on.

Portugal qualify for World Cup

Portugal team qualify for the World CupCristiano Ronaldo and Portugal confirmed their spot at the 2018 World Cup by beating Switzerland 2-0 in their final UEFA qualifier on Tuesday. Anything less than a victory would have seen Portugal forced to go through a two-legged playoff next month, but instead they top Group B on goal difference above the Swiss, who will drop into the playoffs, despite winning all nine of their previous qualifiers. ESPN report “Ronaldo’s star quality is Russia-bound as Portugal qualify for World Cup”.
The draw for the November playoffs will take place next Tuesday in Zurich.

  1. There must be something strange going on – presumably these extra rooms have already been built on the assumption that they would be approved – otherwise what would they have done with them.
