On a seasonal note we  have had some great photos sent in of the Christmas lights in Funchal (the first outside the Sé and the second in Praça Município). Thank you David:

I have to admit that I thought that “Sé” was the name of the cathedral, but correctly the 15th Century structure (one of the few to survive virtually intact since the early period of the colonization of Madeira) is the “Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption”. “Sé” apparently is the abbreviation for Sedes Episcopalis (Episcopal Headquarters)

Trail disputes

Green Cauldron should be accessible by the end of the week. There have been reports recently that tour guides are becoming increasingly frustrated by the sudden closure of mountain trails and levada walks without any prior official announcement. The Director of Forestry, Rocha da Silva, said he understands the complaints but wishes to clarify that their services are “not exempt from the law with regard to the obligation to fulfil all the bureaucratic requirements“

There currently are four closed paths according to information from the Regional Directorate of Forestry; Pico Ruivo, Jardim da Serra (Boca da Corrida) – Encumeada and (still) Ribeiro Frio – Portela. There was a problem in Caldeirão Verde which should have been resolved last week after the removal of a rock-fall.

“Historia Funchal” published

Paper will be presented tomorrow at the Jesuit College. Photo AAUMaThe book ‘History of Funchal’ written by historian Professor Rui Carita and edited by the Academic Association of the University of Madeira (AAUMa) was published last week.

There was assistance from students at the University and collaboration from the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Museum and Museu Photographia Vicentes, among others.

The work, whose publication is part of the commemorations of the 25th anniversary of the University, will be on sale in stores ‘Gaudemus’ UMa and still at Fnac Madeira Shopping. Can’t find a price anywhere.

CR7 latest

If the bookies are to be believed it looks like there will be a new addition to the CR7 Museum in January. If he is not confirmed as the winner of the Ballon d’Or “Footballer of the Year” then it will be totally unjust – and if he is,  then more great (and free) publicity for Madeira! The screenshot below shows that he is clearly “odds-on” favourite:image

Warning of more strong sea waves 24.12.13

The Portuguese Institute of Marine and Atmospheric has just issued a warning of strong sea waves for Madeira. With winds from the NW, waves are forecast  to be between 3.5 and 4.5 meters on the north coast, and 1.5 to 2.5 meters on the south coast.

The captaincy of Porto do Funchal has recommended that the owners and operators of vessels on the north coast take precautions and remain in harbour.

  1. Re-Posted in case you missed it!

There are many reasons that I cannot do the washing up, especially over Christmas.
    Deb asked me:

Why can’t you wash up during Christmas?
I said “Because the Fairy is on top of the tree”.

And that’s when I ended up with the tree up my nether regions….ouch!
