Rain (at last!) in Funchal causes local flooding. Cristiano Ronaldo to sue media for invasion of privacy. Machico cuts food festival budget.

What a difference a week makes! After the spectacular and devastating fires that started last Wednesday we now have much needed rain! I was in the Santa Lucia area this afternoon and I must say it bounced!

Water ingress caused minor flooding in at least two homes and constraints on the roads due to clogging of drainage systems. The Fire Department of Funchal were called out on a number of occasions with people in trouble. A house in the Lazaretto where a fire occurred in the past took in water. In the Caminho da Quinta, in San Roque, an elderly woman living alone had to be assisted by firefighters due to flooding in her residence. There was also a series of blockd drainage channels in San Antonio and downtown.

Cristiano Ronaldo to sue media for invasion of privacy

A story in the ‘Correio da Manhã’ has shown photos of interior of the property where “CR7” , family and girlfriend Irina Shayk are staying in Geres. "There are limits to the disregard for private and intimate life of the people," he wrote on Facebook. Also on Wednesday, the ‘Correio da Manhã’ re-published images of the interior of the property, showing the visit of the agent Jorge Mendes. Two weekly magazines, the "Faces" and "More TV", published pictures of the inside of the property where the footballer is on holiday.

“There are limits to what is admissible. There are limits to the abuse. There are limits to the disregard for private and intimate life of people. The newspaper has, again, disregarded all these limits and demonstrated, once again, in a shameful way, the total disregard for my privacy and my family, breaking the law and ethics of journalism, " he wrote. However, he has also recently published on social networks some personal pictures next to his girlfriend on holiday.

The Diario point out that they have scrupulously respected his privacy.

Machico food festival budget cuts

The Municipality of Machico has reduced by 50% its investment in the organization of 27th Machico Gastronomy Week, which runs from 27 July (tomorrow) until August 5.

The President of the municipality, Antonio Olim, announced at a press conference that the budget for the event is around 30,000 euros. A reduction that is necessary due to the economic crisis, but that does not affect the quality of the event, ensuring the mayor. In the centre of Machico there will be 20 ‘stands’ with gastronomic offerings, in addition to the local restaurants.

One of the novelties will be the installation of a monitored area with inflatables for children, where families can leave the children.

  1. Police have arrested a man accused of starting forest fires last week that ravaged Fajã da Ovelha, Ponta do Pargo and Achadas da Cruz, and 2 others in March. He recently applied to join the fire brigade here, but failed his tests.

Having enjoyed many wonderful holidays amongst welcoming Madeirans I’m saddened to hear about your situation Kimberley and that of other tourists and hope that somehow you are able to enjoy your holiday as you wished. In the meantime Trip Advisor, if you haven’t already discovered it, has two ‘threads’ running on this awful Strawberry World debacle which may provide you with more general information.

Given the disasters and misadventures suffered by Madeirans in recent years I’d have thought the wealthy hotel owners, I fully recognise they are competitors but many of them have benefited considerably from bookings via S W, would have ‘grasped the nettle’ organised themselves as a group on this matter and developed a common approach to saving the holidays of visitors who most probably will never again think about holidaying in Madeira.

Given that tourism is absolutely vital to Madeira in these extremely difficult times this debacle should be seen as an opportunity for hotel owners and the authorities controlling tourism in Madeira to create a marvellous impression in the minds of future visitors and not as a problem which will eventually go away.
