Portugal’s plight needs to be addressed within weeks rather than months

FT Tuesday article title:

Portuguese debt looms over Europe

Portugal’s plight needs to be addressed within weeks rather than months

“If it cannot return to bond markets next year, it will need a second infusion of emergency EU-IMF help.

António Saraiva, president of the CIP, the nation’s business confederation, estimates that Portugal will need an additional €30bn. But the big question is whether even this extra aid would avert a debt write-off.

The euro’s future may depend on the answer…”

The line, extending from street to street Black Career in Funchal, diluted to an hour later, but within the premises remains a great movement of users.

Jose Ferreira, 46, resident in the capital of Madeira, was the second coming: “I have been receiving two times 7.48 euros dentist appointments” and the money will serve “to carry the Giro [ticket] and buy bread “.

The user, unemployed, explained: “It always gives but little way, my mother’s retirement comes just 10 days.” Jose Ferreira expressed concern about a possible cut in reimbursements due to the financial adjustment plan in the region: “I’m afraid it’s over, but I think it will not end,” he said.

Further down the line, John dos Santos, 71, resident in Ponta do Sol, did not hide the anger for having been suspended repayments: “It’s hard, I never saw my land so our Wood went down.” The elderly, who was about to receive 130 euros, lamented that there was no money for health. “Money makes me miss, I need this because I have no money,” blurted, explaining that “reform is small.”

“There are eight euro to come but now you can get lunch,” he said in turn Juliana Silva, 58, of Mount, in the district of Funchal, considering that after you have already taken “holiday pay” money starts to “miss everything.”

The president of IASAUDE, Ana Nunes, said that the payment takes place normally. “What we ask is that people have some attention to the periods for which the payment receipt” Nunes called Ana, explaining: “If corresponds to the first week of January, should come this week of February and so on until the end of months, so that services can flow without major constraints for the users themselves. ”

The official acknowledged that the majority of users there is a certain anxiety and need for the amount of reimbursement. “On the part of the population we can feel it, but let’s be tolerant. If anyone here get to the counter with some difficulty and that does not match this week, we will make payment” secured.

Ana Nunes said he hoped that the situation that occurred in January is “transient and does not happen again.” “Everything indicates that these situations for the future will not repeat, because we are working directly with the Department of Finance,” he added, estimating that this month the IASAUDE pay about 150 000 euro for 4000 refunds for consultations and exams of diagnosis.
