“Three additional motorways in Portugal, including the Algarve’s A22 are since Thursday no longer free.

To travel the length (130 kilometres) of the motorway (Alagrve’s A22) will now cost just under 12 euros.

Payment is done via an international credit card. A deposit of €27.50 is payable and is refunded upon the return of the transponder. The rental period is for 90 days only, and should an extension be sought, the entire process will need to be repeated.

In addition to the deposit, a weekly rental fee is also payable (€6 in the first week, and €1.50 in subsequent weeks). ”Travelling the length of the A22 from Bensafrim (Lagos) in the west to Vila Real do Santo António in the east, will come at a total cost of €11.60, an average of just under nine cents for each of the 130 kilometres the motorway measures.

  1. Hi Martin – belated welcome back greetings!

Funchal WAS busy a few weeks or so ago with many cruise ship visitors ….. somehow these visitor numbers seem to have declined recently – we noticed same last week.

Indeed the “Vila Gale” Hotel in Santa Cruz seems almost empty ….. and Santa Cruz and Machico, in particular, is very quiet. A shame, as the Nativity scence (prospeirio?) in Machico is being built to epic proportions and is simply stunning. Well worth a vist = Such a lot of work….

Anyway, an early Merry Christmas to you and your(s) MG’s…..we hope to be curing (and maybe smoking) our own Gammon joints this year in time for Christmas – not to mention home made sausages! So, if you are passing …..

  3. We were the only 2 in Pestana Casino hotel on saturday having bought ballet tickets, having tea overlooking the harbour.
There is seating for about 200 we guess.
At lunch today again we were the only 2 customers at the Pricce Albert–jolly good it was too, spoilt only by football on TV.
A visit to Sanat Cruz is a must we will ring.
