China aims to develop top Portuguese utility EDP into leading global clean energy group

From Reuters:

“Both companies are highly complementary in terms of competitive strength and development strategies, which provides a common platform,” Three Gorges Chairman Cao Guangjing said during the signing ceremony.

“We want to develop EDP into a sustainable, fast-growing and leading international clean energy group,” he said. EDP unit EDPR is already the world’s fourth-largest wind energy producer.

Cao also said the 2.7 billion euro ($3.5 billion) deal, which also involves Chinese investment in Portugal’s embattled economy, will serve as a bridge to close cooperation between Chinese and Portuguese companies, especially in such fields as trade, finance and tourism.

Portugal’s government agreed to sell the stake — the largest single holding in EDP — under a sell-off of a number of state assets demanded in the terms of a 78 billion euro EU/IMF bailout for Portugal.

Decathlon invests €30 million in Portugal

from Portugal News

“French sports chain Decathlon laid the foundation stone for its new logistics centre in Portugal, which will be completed in 2012.

Decathlon is investing €30 million in the logistics centre that is being built in Setúbal to supply stores across the country. Until now, product distribution was carried out from Spain but the company’s rapid expansion in Portugal led to it building a national logistics centre.

Creation of 420 direct and 500 indirect jobs

In a statement, Decathlon (which belongs to the Oxylane Group) revealed that the project will be ready in October 2012 and will create 420 direct and 500 indirect jobs once it is fully running.

“Taking Decathlon Portugal’s rapid expansion into consideration, with 14 stores opened during the last three years, and a total now of 22 stores, it became urgent to find a solution that would support the chain’s expansion plans,” said the statement.

Aside from Decathlon, Oxylane also has three Koodza sports shops in Portugal.

The French company arrived in Portugal in 1993 and started its activity with production. In 2000 the first store was opened. Currently, aside from stores, it produces and exports sports clothing and equipment all over the world and employs 1,200 people in Portugal…”
