Madeira’s Leader met Portuguese PM to discuss austerity measures

Excerpts from Portugal Daily View article:

“The leader of the autonomous region of Madeira, Alberto João Jardim, met Monday with Prime Minister Passos Coelho and with Minister of Finance Vítor Gaspar, to reportedly discuss the austerity measures to be imposed on the island and the possibility of allowing the region to contract a loan under a special allowance in the 2012 state budget in case of financial problems.

An intermediary will be also created by Madeira‘s government to discuss the austerity measures in the autonomous region with the central government according to sources quoted by news agency Lusa…”

Madeira island will not escape the implementation of austerity measures and the central government is going to impose a tight budget control on the island’s accounts.

The leader of Madeira met yesterday with the prime minister at his official residence in Lisbon, the São Bento Palace to discuss the austerity measures which are to be imposed on the island to get its finances back on track.

According to data revealed by Portuguese National Finance Minister Vítor Gaspar last September Madeira region had and an estimated debt of 123% of GDP

The Portugal Daily View article states that: Público Newspaper says the two leaders agreed to implement the programme “the sooner the better”, while the final details concerning the methodology to be adopted in the bailout of the archipelago are being defined.

The Minister of Finance said late September that Madeira’s debt was around €6.3bn after the Bank of Portugal and the national statistics agency INE revealed a hole in Madeira‘s budget, uncovering a “shocking” amount of unreported debts.”

Report says Portugal should not leave Common Currency and Portugal is mending its ways

Excerpt from Press Release of The Report ‘The 2011 Euro Plus Monitor: Progess Amid the Turmoil’ published by The Lisbon Council- ‘Think Tank for the 21st century’

“The evidence presented shows that the oft-heard suggestion that crisis countries like Greece,
Portugal and Spain need to leave the common currency to regain their external balance is wrong.
Instead, the changes forced by the crisis have put the eurozone on track for a major convergence
between core and peripheral countries.

Countries that have been lagging behind (such as Greece
and Portugal) are mending their ways. Conversely, some of the countries that have little need to
adjust (such as Germany) as shown by top rankings in the Overall Health Indicator, are relaxing
the fiscal reins and reducing their external surpluses because they can afford it. They thus show
up with low scores in the Adjustment Progress Indicator.”
