6TH FUNCHAL INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: November, 12 – 19

From Madeira’s official Tourism Website

“Lights! Camera! Action!
This is how another edition of Funchal International Film Festival (FICF) will be set in motion in Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre.

The key objective of the FICF is to uncover quality cinematography pieces unknown to Madeira’s public, gathered in a variety of options, from movies to documentaries. Another striking feature of this festival is the recognition of the great film careers, which allowed, in previous editions, the passage through the island of actresses, such as Claudia Cardinale and Geraldine Chaplin, in order to receive such unique honour.

This year, Terry Jones, a member of the Monty Python, the British comedy group very popular in the 70’s, will receive this honour. Dutch actor Derek De Lint, who is living in Hollywood and has participated in box office hits such as “3 men and a baby”, will preside the jury. Brazilian actor Reginaldo Faria, Portuguese actor Ricardo Pereira – soap opera heartthrobs –, Portuguese actress Ana Brito e Cunha and Portuguese musician Bernardo Sassetti, among others, will also attend the event.

  1. I wonder if a kind hearted Madeiran would lend me their Lamborghini or Ferrari (at a pinch I’d drive a Porsche) to have a whizzz in the Paul do Mar Rally!
I’d keep the damage repairable in return!

  2. From the Euronews….Strike brings transport system to a halt in Portugal.

Metro stations were empty across Portugal as transport workers staged a strike in protest at the government’s austerity package. The measures include longer working hours and wage cuts.

Bus services and ferry crossings were also hit with the rail workers union claiming nearly 100 per cent of their members had joined the strike.

“I agree with the strike but it is the people who are paying. Those in charge are the ones who do the dumb things, those who make the companies go bust, but we are the ones who pay for the tickets,” said Maria Albertina, one affected commuter.

The biggest impact of the walk-out was felt by railway passengers. The action is set to be followed by a general strike on November 24.

Portugal became the third country in the euro zone to seek a bail out in May after Greece and Ireland. The country’s centre-right government adopted the programme of austerity measures in an effort to reduce its deficit
