Portugal News article:

“Bank of Portugal claims 2010 was ‘best year ever’ for tourism revenue..”

“Tourism revenue in Portugal last year.. “reached an all-time high, according to the Bank of Portugal (BdP). Figures released last week by the BdP show tourism-generated revenue grew last year by 10 percent to total €7.6 billion.

Biggest growths in contributions were found to have come from alternative countries

“Those markets also grew in terms of spending, by 6.6 and 9.1 percent, respectively.

Together the British and French markets were responsible for spending more than €2.7 billion

Spain and Germany followed as third and fourth biggest spenders, respectively

But the ‘emerging market’ sector also contributed significantly to the rise in revenue, with tourists from countries such as Angola gaining increasing significance

Last year Angolan tourists represented the fifth most important nationality of tourist, revenue-wise, having spent some €327 million while on holiday in Portugal. Even though this amount only makes up 4.3 percent of the total credit, it is still a rise of 60.3 percent in comparison to previous years.

Revenue generated by Brazilian and American tourists also increased, by 57.5 percent and 24.4 percent, respectively, putting €309 million and €301 million in Portugal’s pot…”

EDP Energias de Portugal: best results ever

Reuters:

“..EDP posted a 5 percent rise in 2010 net profit, largely in line with the market consensus, helped by strong performances in Brazil and at the group’s wind energy unit.

Net profit reported by Portugal’s main utility rose to a record of nearly 1.08 billion euros ($1.5 billion), in line with an average forecast of 1.07 billion in a Reuters poll.

“We have here the company’s best results ever, in a context defined by the company’s international expansion,” CEO Antonio Mexia told reporters. “55 percent of the pretax earnings came from outside Portugal.”
