TAP ends Johannesburg route

Times Live:

“TAP PORTUGAL will cease flights on the Lisbon-Johannesburg route from June 1, the airline said this week.

The carrier plans to focus on its direct route between Maputo and Lisbon. Travellers wishing to fly from Johannesburg will be accommodated on short-haul flights on Mozambican carrier LAM and South African Airways.”

“It’s a quiet end to a 45 years of history.”

“TAP began commercial operations on September 19, 1946, flying Douglas DC-3 Dakotas between Lisbon and Madrid

The “Imperial Line”

The next major route to open was the “Imperial Line” from Lisbon to Luanda in Angola and Lourenco Marques (now Maputo) in Mozambique, Portugal’s biggest colonies. The Imperial Line started out with the same plodding and unbreakable DC-3s that had had revolutionised air travel in the 1930s – but…

flights involved 12 overnight stops as the aircraft rumbled their way slowly down Africa.

Flights to Johannesburg began in the mid-60s, first using Lockheed Constellation piston-engined aircraft and then Boeing 707s, the Jet Age airliner that did for modern air travel what the DC-3 had done for commercial aviation in 1935.”
