Rare seal sighted by Lobosonda

The whale/dolphin watching boat ‘Ribeira Brava’ from the company
Lobosonda has sighted a seal in the last week off Madeira. This photograph shows it eating a ray. As always the captain Claudia has recorded the sighting well with photographs and films of the sighting. Thanks Claudia again for contributing photographs to the blog.

The Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus) is a pinniped belonging to the Phocidae family. At some 450-510 (fewer than 600) remaining individuals it is believed to be the world’s second rarest pinniped (second only to the Saimaa Ringed Seal) and one of the most endangered mammals in the world.

The main colony in Madeira region is on and around The Desertas Islands. Some of the small colony come in and out of the waters of the main island Madeira to feed.

  1. I finally got to the Art Deco exhibition at Casa das Mudas this morning. Wow… completely blown away by the multitude of exhibits and the fact that nothing was sealed off… you could get ridiculously close to Lalique amongst others… they’d all be in glass cases in London with beady-eyed security watching your every move. Incredibly, I was one of only about 3 people in the entire building. If that wasn’t enough excitement, I had the best Pastel de Nata in their cafe after nearly 2 months of being here. Worth the drive alone… talking of which, if anyone’s intending to visit, you pay for the car park in the shop… don’t walk around the car park looking for a machine like a stupid Londoner.

  2. At the show M said “that looks like a Mogliani bronze” ( Excuse spelling!)
    It was.
    Must be worth zillions.
We are going again to pick up on the stuff we must have missed.
    Closed Mondays
M’s arm is repairing well. now indulging in Fizziotherapy 3 nights a week to get it going.
What a way to spend a holiday!
Never mind could have been shipwrecked like aunt was on “The Lakonia” Dec 1963 and spend 23 hours in the water before recovery.
    Cousin and husband drowned.
It was researching this event that first brought us to Madeira.
We love the place despite holes in pavements and one unfortunate incident of which least said better etc.
Still looking for something more permamnet which we shall leave until next trip.
    Snow on the peaks tonight

  3. Martin-ever-so-sore
Glad that the arm is slowly improving. Beware of fizzios. daughter is one and they are really cruel people.
Suppose the moral is “Always look down when walking in Funchal – It helps to avoid the holes”

  4. Yellow alert for temperatures on the continent 11ºC em Lisboa, 12ºC no Porto e em Faro. Estão previstos 2ºC na Guarda, 5ºC em Viseu e Bragança, 6ºC em Vila Real e 7ºC em Castelo Branco

  5. Hello Martin.

You write you will go the exposition in Calheta. I look for transportation, can I drive with you? If you didn’t go there already. I stay at the Raga hotel in the hotel area. Near the Lido. There are no busses going there. Therefore I ask this.
