Doctors optimistic that Alberto João Jardim can return to his political career after heart attack

The Madeiran Diario Newspaper reports that doctors treating Alberto João Jardim, The President of the Regional Government of Madeira hospitalised at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for a heart attack 2 days ago are optimistic that he can return to his political career after he recuperates.

“First elected in 1978, Alberto João Jardim has since then been successively elected President of the Regional Government of Madeira. He is a member of the:
-Council of State of the Portuguese Republic as the President of the Regional Government of Madeira
-State Defense Council of the Portuguese Republic
-State Internal Defense Superior Council of the Portuguese Republic
-Homeland Security Superior Council of the Portuguese Republic.

He is one of the longest-serving, democratically elected leaders of any jurisdiction in the world.

Alberto João Jardim is also a member and ex-Vice President (2000–2001) of the European Union Committee of the Regions. He is Honorary President of the European Summit of Regions & Cities.

He is the founder and a member of the Assembly of European Regions. He was Vice-President of European People’s Party.”

Mourinho wins first FIFA Coach of the Year award

Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho “now with Real Madrid, was given the accolade after leading Inter Milan to a treble of Champions League, Serie A and Italian Cup last season.

He won the poll ahead of two Spaniards, Vicente del Bosque, who led Spain to last year’s World Cup, and Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.”

Saipem 7000 the world’s second largest crane vessel, after the Thialf is moored at the Port of Funchal.

The crane radius of the Saipem 7000 grants a lifting capability of 14,000 tonnes at 42 meters while the Thialf can lift 14,200 tonnes at 31.2 meters. It is owned by the oil and gas industry contractor Saipem S.p.A.

First Portuguese-American to be elected state senator in New York

Newsday.com reports:

“Jack Martins (R-Mineola) says he believes he’s the first Portuguese-American to be elected state senator in New York. Martins told about 200 people in the Capitol’s Senate chamber after his swearing-in that his parents came from Portugal in the 1960s, before he was born.”

He explained later that his family is originally from northern Portugal, and he visits “once or twice every year.” As a former president of the New York State Portuguese Civic Association, Martins said he’s proud of this first – as difficult as it may be to quickly document.

Portuguese journalist Carlos Castro murdered in US

Guardian article:

“Celebrity Portuguese television journalist Carlos Castro has been found murdered in a New York hotel.

Castro, who also was a columnist and author apart from his TV work, was admired for his bravery in coming out as a gay man.”

Friends described him as having “kind of a Liberace style”.

    Wednesday will reveal whether Portugal has a realistic chance of raising the funds it needs in 2011. If the price is too steep then the markets are likely to conclude the country is heading for insolvency or the bail-out club. Some analysts, I noted, were saying already that Portugal was “quietly insolvent”.

    The Saipem 7000 is here for refuelling, on its way from Gibraltar (left on the 5th) to the Gulf of Mexico. 110 Madeirenses are part of the 350 crew. The platform also functions as a floating hotel with 800 beds, a hospital and a cinema. The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture and the media are going aboard tomorrow at 11.15 am. Today’s online Diario has statistics for anyone particularly interested.

    The Luna Parque (amusement park) at Praia Formosa is extended to Sunday 16th to compensate for the bad weather in December. For this final week, all amusements are reduced to 1 euro. ….D. Cidade

    The Tourism Secretary interviewed in the J. Madeira said that 2010 was a bad year due to the volcanic ash, February 20th, strikes in Portugal, France and Spain and snow in Europe in December. The German and UK markets showed signs of recovery. She said that planes need to be filled and the next decade of tourism needs re-planning.
    TAP is increasing taxes for Madeira/continent by 4 euros on a one-way ticket (15 to 19 euros). Same increase for Madeira/Azores.
    New flights this summer. Monarch Airlines direct charter flights from Glasgow Prestwick Airport on 4th, 11th and 18th July. Regency Travel has partnered with Atlantic Holidays for two holidays to Madeira from the Isle of Man in May and August. Seven nights departing on Monday May 2nd and August 29th.

    The pipa of Vinho Madeira aboard the naval training ship, the Sagres, which has recently been around the world and presently docked in Lisboa, will arrive in Madeira on February 11th. The wine will be chemically analysed and is expected to have sensory alterations and at the level of the palate.

    For the Epiphany, on the 5th January, the 160 m long, 520 kg Bolo Rei that was served free in the Praça do Município took 15 minutes to be devoured. It was provided by the confectioner Penha d’Águia, Empresa de Cervejas da Madeira and Café Nestlé. There were two camels present in this celebration of the Three Kings, which came from the Circo Dallas. The Mayor of Funchal, Miguel Albuquerque, apprehensively offered a carrot to one of them. Next year, the cake might be at another location, the Avenida do Mar or the Placa Central. The annual evening entertainment in the Jardim Municipal was well attended despite the pouring rain at the beginning of the 90 minutes concert.
