Empty & rundown housing in Funchal, Flights to Paris

Source : Diário de Notícias 6/3/2008

Two house fires in Funchal in the space of a week, and one death have provoked the highlighting of the huge number of run-down and abandoned houses in Funchal, and the potential for many more such incidents. In the house where the death occurred, there are now 3 more homeless people living there. Complaints to the Câmara (council) go unanswered. In a fine old city that generates so much tourist revenue, to have so many homeless people and so many empty and dangerous houses is pretty inexcusable … I suppose it’s like many other cities in this respect, the rich get richer … forget the guy on the streets … and crime only affects other people. Shame on you Presidente Jardim, shame on you Funchal Câmara.

The ‘low cost’ airline Transavia (part of the group of Air France & KLM) will commence two weekly flights between Paris and Madeira, commencing on 21st April 2008, offering in total 370 seats. Tickets are already on sale on the website www.transavia.com. The headline pricing is currently between €38 and €130 each way, but there are taxes, fuel surcharges, and security charges to add onto that. I checked out a return flight in May, costing €110, but the price more than doubled with the surcharges added on.

That’s pretty much it, despite scouring nearly every page today!

After a disappointing knock for Porto last night in a penalty shoot out, the last European football hopes for Portugal lie in the somewhat meaningless UEFA Cup, looking for a place in the quarter finals:

Benfica v Getafe 20:30

Bolton v Sporting 20:00

These are the first leg matches, the second leg games being played next week.
