2008 Public Holidays … good news! Should we expose the levada mugger … have your say

Well what a week that was, Nacional beating Porto (their first defeat this season) and Marítimo getting an away win. Anyone watch the celebrations last night in Funchal (live or on TV?) … Xmas is certainly big event on Madeira, new year evn bigger.

After a whopping 68 blog visitors on Friday, it was down to nearly half of that Saturday and Sunday. I am guessing there was some last minute Xmas shopping going on?

THE BAD NEWS AND THE GOOD NEWS FOR WORKERS

The bad news first is of course that 2008 is a leap year, and most people will have to work an extra day, and if you are salaried, the chances are you will be working without extra pay.

But! For those who don’t already know, Madeira’s public holidays that fall on a weekend are ‘lost days’ … they do not carry forward to the next working day. However, in 2008, 14 of these public holidays fall on working weekdays (3 more than in 2007), and with ‘good wind’ and some employer generosity that could increase even further with the possibility of upto 7 ‘bridge days’ (where the public holiday is close to the weekend, so the two are joined 2 into a longer break) and 4 more where a minimum period of rest is necessary. So, if you are one of the really lucky ones, you will get 154 days off work in 2008, leaving just 212 to be worked.

Beware though as the above is based on Funchal holidays, and regional and employer variations will apply.

According to the Diário de Notícias (21/12/2007) nearly 45,000 british passport holders arrived on Madeira during November. I reckon they probably spent over €30 million between them on everything. So tell me how come I can’t get a proper job here?

Finally, if you have been following this week’s blog thread on the levada muggings, you will have seen a response from ‘the’ levada mugger himself. I have managed to obtain a photograph from a secret source showing the levada mugger wearing his mugging outfit, with his wife and one of his 12 kids. I feel sorry for the guy as he has so many kids to feed, so I have a dilemma as to whether I should publish the photo or not, so please help me  to decide whether I should publish the photo and expose the rogue. Please respond to this blog with your views on what I should do. If the majority feel he should be exposed, then I will publish it on Boxing Day (Wednesday), or if you think I should show some compassion and keep his identity secret please respond saying why.
