Casa da levada is a great location and base for Levadas walking and sight seeing. Situated just above the picturesque fishing village of Caniçal and at the end of the levada do Canical, its a great starting point for exploring the local Levadas directly from the house. leaving the car at home and heading for Pico do facho, larano, marocos, Baia da Abra to mention just a few popular locations. Caniçal village is about fifteen minutes walk with its many good restaurants and whale museum.You can sit out in the local cafe or bar and watch the local fishermen haul in their latest catch. Only five minutes drive will take you to the only natural sandy beach in Madeira Prainha, it's a very nice walk down to this beach and very popular with the locals in the summer. Just beyond the beach is the fantastic new marina Quinta do Lorde a must see . Then the start of the very popular walk out across the peninsula Baia da Abre. Five minutes drive west will bring you to the lovely village of Machico. Caniçal Village: Caniçal has a modern public swimming pool equipped with sun loungers restaurant and coffee shop.The sea front has many restaurants cafe,s mini markets and small shops.The whale museum is worth a visit and gives you a good insight into the history of this once important whaling port. A major supermarket can be found just off the motorway outside Machico (modelo). Canicals main industry are agriculture and fishing. The peninsula just behind the village ( Ponta de Sao Lourenço) is a nature reserve and stretchs out West for five kilometers, a very popular walk. Being the oldest parish of Madeira island it has a very rich religious tradition. On the third weekend of September fishermen go out to sea in the procession of Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of Mercy). Colorfully decorated boats sail around in the bay of Caniçal.
